NFL Mourns Chet Brooks, Super Bowl Champion and Aggies Legend

Former 49ers defensive back and Texas A&M legend remembered for impact on and off the field

Chet Brooks, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the San Francisco 49ers and a celebrated former defensive back for the Texas A&M Aggies, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 60 years old, Texas A&M announced.

News of Brooks’ passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from former teammates, fans, and Aggies alumni across social media, many posting the word “here” a tradition used by Texas A&M to honor members of the Aggie community who have passed away.

A Texas A&M Icon and Defensive Leader

Before his NFL career, Brooks made his mark at Texas A&M, where he became one of the most respected defensive players in school history. He was a key member of the Aggies’ dominant defense during the mid-1980s and is widely credited with coining the famous “Wrecking Crew” nickname.

During his college career, Brooks helped lead Texas A&M to three conference championships and multiple Cotton Bowl appearances. His standout performances earned him All-Conference honors as well as All-America recognition.

In 2011, Texas A&M inducted Brooks into the Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the program’s all-time greats.

Super Bowl Success With the San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers selected Brooks in the 11th round of the 1988 NFL Draft. Though drafted late, he quickly carved out a role as a reliable defensive back on a powerhouse roster.

Brooks played three seasons with the 49ers from 1988 to 1990 and was part of two Super Bowl championship teams during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. One of his most memorable moments came during Super Bowl XXIV, when he intercepted a pass against the Denver Broncos.

Over his NFL career, Brooks appeared in 33 games, recording one sack, a fumble recovery, and two postseason interceptions one against the Minnesota Vikings and another on football’s biggest stage.

Remembered Beyond the Stat Sheet

While Brooks’ on-field accomplishments were impressive, many who knew him remember him just as strongly for his leadership and character. Former teammates and fans described him as a competitor who brought intensity, pride, and professionalism to every level of the game.

His death marks the loss of a respected figure in both college and professional football, leaving behind a legacy that spans championships, tradition, and mentorship.

A Lasting Legacy

Chet Brooks’ impact on football will continue to be felt at Texas A&M and within the San Francisco 49ers organization. From helping define one of college football’s most famous defenses to contributing on Super Bowl-winning teams, his story reflects perseverance, dedication, and excellence.

He is survived by family, friends, former teammates, and generations of fans who will remember his contributions to the game.
