No. 10 Iowa survives a dramatic late collapse and dominates overtime to defeat No. 15 Maryland, staying unbeaten in Big Ten play.

Hawkeyes Blow 17-Point Lead but Regain Control in Extra Period

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 10 Iowa endured a dramatic late-game collapse before regrouping in overtime to defeat No. 15 Maryland 85–78 on Thursday night, preserving its unbeaten run in Big Ten play. Ava Heiden led the Hawkeyes with 20 points as Iowa improved to 17–2 overall and 8–0 in conference action.

Maryland’s Furious Rally Forces Overtime

Iowa appeared firmly in control late in the fourth quarter, holding a commanding 66–49 lead with just over three minutes remaining. What followed was a stunning comeback by Maryland, fueled by defensive pressure and timely scoring. The Terrapins erased the 17-point deficit and tied the game at 73 when Oluchi Okananwa drilled a clutch 3-pointer with 9.3 seconds left in regulation.

Iowa had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Chazadi Wright’s jumper was blocked, sending the game to overtime after one of the wildest finishes of the season.

Hawkeyes Respond When It Matters Most

Despite briefly falling behind in overtime, Iowa quickly reasserted itself. Maryland’s offense stalled down the stretch, and the Hawkeyes capitalized with disciplined execution on both ends of the floor. Iowa outscored Maryland 12–5 in the extra period to seal the victory.

Chazadi Wright added 18 points for Iowa, which extended its winning streak to seven games. The Hawkeyes showed composure after the collapse, a trait that continues to define their strong conference run.

Maryland Falls Short After Emotional Effort

Maryland, now 17–4 overall and 5–4 in Big Ten play, was led by Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu, who recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds. Okananwa was instrumental in the comeback, scoring crucial baskets and free throws during the final minute of regulation.

The Terrapins briefly led in overtime but could not sustain momentum, suffering their second straight loss following last weekend’s defeat at UCLA.

Historic Start for Iowa, Tough Tests Ahead

Iowa’s 8–0 start in Big Ten play marks its best conference opening since the 1995–96 season, when the Hawkeyes won their first 12 league games. Iowa and No. 3 UCLA remain the only undefeated teams in conference action.

The Hawkeyes will face another major test this weekend when they take on No. 12 Ohio State, a matchup that could have significant implications for the Big Ten title race.
