George Clooney made a subtle statement at the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards, greeting the audience in French just weeks after President Donald Trump publicly mocked the actor over his newly acquired French citizenship.
While presenting the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Clooney opened with a short message in French that quickly caught the attention of viewers.
A French Greeting on a Global Stage
“Bonsoir, mes amis. C’est un honneur d’être ici,” Clooney said during his appearance on stage a phrase translating to, “Good evening, my friends. It’s an honor to be here.”
The moment was brief, but it sparked online chatter, with many interpreting it as a subtle nod to Clooney’s recent move to France.
Trump’s Remarks Resurface
Clooney’s French greeting comes just two weeks after Trump celebrated and criticized Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, for becoming French citizens. In a social media post, Trump mocked Clooney’s political views and film career while criticizing France’s immigration policies.
When asked about the moment, a White House representative dismissed the speculation, saying, “Nobody cares.”
Why the Clooneys Moved to France
The Clooneys, along with their 8-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, were granted French citizenship last year. The family has since been living in France, a decision Clooney has described as intentional and deeply personal.
In past interviews, Clooney explained that he and Amal chose to step away from Hollywood to provide their children with a more grounded upbringing.
A Life Away From Hollywood
Speaking candidly about his family’s lifestyle, Clooney said life in the French countryside offers his children a sense of normalcy.
“They’re not on their iPads,” he explained. “They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
The actor also admitted he worried about raising his children in Los Angeles, citing concerns about the culture of fame and constant exposure.
Embracing a Quieter Lifestyle
Though Clooney once dreamed of escaping farm life while growing up in Kentucky, he now finds himself returning to it quite literally.
“I drive a tractor and all those things,” he said, reflecting on how his perspective has changed over time.
In addition to their home in France, the Clooneys maintain properties in Italy, England, and Kentucky, balancing privacy with their global careers.
Protecting Privacy in the Spotlight
Amal Clooney has also spoken openly about the challenges of maintaining privacy while raising children in the public eye. She revealed that the couple prioritizes phone-free gatherings at home to protect personal moments with family and friends.
For George Clooney, the French greeting at the Golden Globes was brief but it underscored a larger life shift focused on family, privacy, and stepping away from Hollywood’s glare.
